The Doctor in Social Development (DSD) Program of the UP College of Social Work and Community Development (UP-CSWCD) in collaboration with the Research Department of the Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Torture Survivors (RCT), Denmark and the Balay Rehabilitation Center (Balay) are proud to announce the availability of four (4) Thesis grants starting the 2nd semester, 2011.

About the Scholarship Grants

Masters students currently enrolled in CSWCD, CSSP and other applied social science courses in UP Diliman can avail of thesis grants starting the 2nd semester, 2011-2012 for one year. The candidates' dissertation must address issues related to violence, suffering and human rights in the Philippines. The proposed thesis topic will be one major criterion in the selection process that will be jointly conducted by UP-CSWCD, RCT and Balay (a Filipino service organization that advocates for human rights for marginalized groups). The scholarships aim to create a renewed, scholarly interest in issues of violence, suffering and human rights in the Philippines.

Successful candidates will benefit from the scholarship in several ways. They will

• Be part of an interdisciplinary research group involving other students, NGOs and an international research institution.

• Receive supervision from international researchers to help improve and finalize thesis work,

• Receive a small grant and student allocation for data collection and field work

• Participate in research and training workshops in the Philippines or abroad (to be determined)

• Contribute through knowledge generation to alleviate suffering in the Philippines

• Prepare for a future in research, scholarly or NGO work

Successful candidates are expected to

• Work hard and complete their theses within one year

• Participate in the research activities (discussion groups and seminars) of the research group

• Interact with Balay Rehabilitation Center, RCT and CSWCD

Requirements

1. Currently enrolled in CSWCD, CSSP and other applied social science courses in UP Diliman, with at least a GWA of 1.75.

2. Submit a completed application form with a cover letter, detailed CV with names, addresses and contact numbers of three referees (e-mail addresses), and certified copies of degrees/ diplomas.

3. Submit a brief research proposal (based on thesis topic) related to "violence, suffering and human rights in the Philippines", including brief theoretical and methodological considerations (not exceeding two pages).

4. Recommendation letter from the thesis adviser/ program adviser.
